Week #2

Assignment #1:
LITERACY
Literacy is the ability of someone to read and write. It is one of the most crucial components of learning, since it is almost impossible to function in the world without being literate. Literacy and numeracy are the first goals of education, and it is the responsibility of the teacher to ensure the proficiency of this ability by each student.
The way I was taught to become literate, was through a few step process. Firstly, my class and I learned the ABC’s. Lots of time was spent on each letter of the alphabet, ensuring each student knew the sound it makes, the way it looks, and the letter’s function within a word. Secondly, we continued on with the mix of different letters together, and the sound they make. We then continued on with sight words, which we learned to recognize and read, over time. After this foundation was in place, the reading & writing process continued on over the next year or two, until we all grasped it fully, and were able to read a full book! Subsequently, the way to improve in this area is to read more, thereby gaining the expertise necessary to be a fast and avid reader & writer.

I think it’s extremely important to make the learning process alive and exciting, to engage all students alike! Furthermore, it is of vital importance for the educator to ensure each students success, the weaker ones as well. For those students that need extra help, it is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure the help is gotten, and the student does not fail.

Assignment #2:

VIDEO REFLECTION
This video on practices in the classroom is great! Ms. Owen has amazing methods how to teach her kindergarten students reading & writing. Firstly, her buildup of getting her students to her goal of independent reading & writing is done in a smart way. It is obvious that lots of thought was put into her lesson plans, and by following those tactics, she got her students to be able to read & write on their own! She started with teaching her students outright, then continuing on to guided reading, shared reading; eventually leading up to independent reading & writing. As was shown in the video, at the end of this buildup, the students were able to read and write on their own! Secondly, the method of splitting the class into smaller groups is a great way of observing each student individually. It allows the teacher to see where each child is holding, and gave Ms. Owen the opportunity to do so in a nonconforming manner. Furthermore, children act differently when learning/playing on their own, and this can give the teacher new insights into the child, as the child is behaving on his/her own turf, and not feeling threatened by an adult overlooking.
Assignment #3:
CRITIQUE OF LESSON PLAN
The sample lesson plan shown is extremely thought out and detail oriented. I like the way each step is so clear and organized, and the goals so clearly stated.
Ms. Owen's way of bringing out her points is smart. Each individual student is involved, and learns about found poems together. However, I wonder if it's necessary to invite parents/relatives to view the end performance. The students were working on their poems as class work, not getting ready for a major performance!
